What is Deepavali?

Learn about the festival celebrated by Hindus which is known as 'Deepavali'.

A colorful festival that is celebrated by all Hindus worldwide is Deepavali, which is also known as the festival of lights. This festival usually falls around late October and November. One important practice that the Hindus follow during the festival is to light oil lamps in their homes on Deepavali morning. By lighting the oil lamps, the Hindus are thanking the gods for the happiness, knowledge, peace and wealth that they have received. The Hindus consider Deepavali as one of the most important festivals to celebrate.

The Legend -

There is even an interesting legend behind this festival. The story goes that Narakasura, a demon, ruled the kingdom of Pradyoshapuram. Under his rule, the villagers suffered a lot of hardship as the demon tortured the people and kidnapped the women to be imprisoned in his palace. Seeing his wickedness, Lord Khrishna set out to destroy the demon and the day Narakasura died was celebrated as Deepavali, the triumph of good over evil!

Preparations -

Preparation for Deepavali starts usually at least two to three weeks before the festival. It is known that the Hindus will be busy cleaning their houses to prepare for the festival. Some would even renovate their houses to prepare it for Deepavali. Usually the family will shop for new clothes and for accessories to decorate their homes. Prior to the festival, Indian shops will be selling festive items like Deepavali greeting cards, carpets, Punjabi suits and flowers. The Hindus will frequent these shops when they are shopping for Deepavali.

Celebrations -

The Hindus usually awake early in the morning of deepavali around 3am and the first ritual will be having an oil bath, which is an important feature of Deepavali. Hindus will be dressed in their new clothes on Deepavali. Most of the ladies would be clad in silk saris or Punjabi suits of various bright shades. Hindus particularly dislike dressing in black on that day, as they consider black an inauspicious color for the festival. Hindus would also pay their respects to the elderly and most families would go to the temple after having breakfast. This is also an important practice for them. The reason why they would be going to the temples is to pray to get happiness and prosperity on Deepavali. The houses would be decorated with oil lamps and children will play with firecrackers to celebrate the festival. On the first day, they would not go visiting but would stay at home to welcome the guests who visit them.

Food -

Visiting Hindus during Deepavali will be an interesting activity, as you will get to taste a wide variety of delicious food. In every home that you visit you are bound to be served with a tempting spread of sweets. Some of the popular sweets are halwa, burfi and laddu. Hindus love eating spicy food and for non-vegetarians they indulge in favorites like chicken tandoori, prawn sambal and fish head curry. In homes of Hindus who are vegetarians popular dishes like thosais, idlis and naans are prepared.

மைக்கேல் ஜாக்சன்: ஓர் இசையின் வரலாறு

உலக ரசிகர்களையே தனது பாப் இசையாலும், நளினமான நடன அசைவுகளாலும் மயங்கவைத்த பிரபல பாப் இசை பாடகர் மைக்கேல் ஜாக்சன் இன்று அதிகாலை மாரடைப்பால் மரணம் அடைந்தார். ஜாக்சனின் மறைவுச் செய்தி, உலகமெங்கும் உள்ள அவரது ரசிகர்கள் மத்தியில் சோக கீதமாய் ஒலித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

கடந்த 1958 ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்ட் 29ம் தேதி இண்டியானா நகரில் ஜோசப் வால்டர் - கேத்ரின் எஸ்தர் என்ற ஏழை தம்பதியின் 7வது மகனாக பிறந்த பிறந்தார் மைக்கேல் ஜாக்சன். அந்த குடும்பத்தில் மொத்தம் 9 குழந்தைகள். வறுமையின் பிடியில் சிக்கி தவித்த நிலையிலும், இளம் வயதிலேயே இசையின் மீதும், நடனம் மீதும் அதிக நாட்டம் கொண்டிருந்தார் ஜாக்சன்.

பாடல் எழுதுவது, அதற்கு இசையமைப்பது, பாடலுக்கு ஏற்றாற் போல் நடனம் ஆடுவது, இடை இடையே கொஞ்சம் நவரச நடிப்பு என அனைத்து திறமையையும் கலந்து 'பாப்' என்ற புதிய உலகை அவர் படைத்தார்.

11வது வயதிலேயே தனது சகோதரர்களுடன் இணைந்து அவர் நடத்திய, 'தி ஜாக்சன் 5' என்ற இசை நிகழ்ச்சி, பாப் பிரியர்களை பரவசப்படுத்தியது. இதற்கு கிடைத்த ஏகோபித்த வரவேற்பை பார்த்து அதை ஆல்பமாகவும் வெளியிட்டார் ஜாக்சன்.

இதை தொடர்ந்து வெளியான 'ஐ வாண்ட் யூ பேக்' என்ற இசை ஆல்பமும் ரசிகர்கள் மத்தியில் பெருத்த வரவேற்பை ‌பெற்று, ஒட்டு மொத்த உலமும் ஜாக்சனை திரும்பி பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்தது. அதன் பிறகு ஜாக்சனின் இசைப்பயணம் வெற்றிக்கரமாக பயணிக்க தொடங்கியது.

இசையுலகில் கடந்த 1971 முதல் தனி ஆவர்த்தனம் செய்ய ஆரம்பித்த ஜாக்சன், தனது நிகழ்ச்சிகளை ஆல்பங்களாகவும் வெளியிட்டு வந்தார். இது உலகம் முழுவதும் லட்சக்கணக்கான ரசிகர்களையும் அவருக்கு பெற்றுத் தந்தது.

1972ல் 'காட் டு தி தேர்', 1979ல் 'ஆப் தி வால்', 1982ல் 'திரில்லர்', 1987ல் 'பேட்', 1991ல் 'டேஞ்சரஸ்' மற்றும் 1995ல் 'ஹிஸ்டரி' போன்ற ஆல்பங்கள் உலகளவில் விற்பனையில் சக்கப்போடு போட்டன.

1980களில் பாப் உலகின் முடிசூடா மன்னனாக திகழ்ந்த நிலையில், மேற்கத்திய கலாச்சாரங்களை பிரதிபலிக்கும் எம்.டி.வி. தனது ஒளிபரப்பை துவக்கியது. அந்த டிவியில் ஜாக்சன் நடத்திய 'பீட் இட்', 'பில்லி ஜூன்' மற்றும் 'திரில்லர்' போன்ற இசை நிகழ்ச்சிகள், அவரது புகழை உலகம் முழுவதும் பரப்பியதோடு, அந்த டிவியையும் குறுகிய காலத்தில் பிரபலப்படுத்தியது.

தொடர் வெற்றிகள் காரணமாக, 75 கோடி ஆல்பங்கள், 13 கிராமி விருதுகள் பெற்று, ஈடு இணையற்ற பாப் பாடகராக கின்னஸ் புத்தகத்திலும் இடம் பெற்றார் மைக்கேல் ஜாக்சன்.

ஆனால், கடந்த 1990களின் கடைசியில் இருந்து கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக சரிவை சந்திக்க ஆரம்பித்தார் ஜாக்சன். பிளாஸ்டிக் சர்ஜரி முறையில் பலமுறை முகத்தை மாற்றியது மற்றும் பண விவகாரம் போன்றவற்றால் பெரும் சர்ச்சைகளில் சிக்கினார். தனது பண்ணை வீட்டில் குழந்தைகளை பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் செய்ததாக எழுந்த குற்றச்சாட்டின் அடிப்படையில் அவர் நீதிமன்ற படியேறினார். வழக்கு விவகாரங்களுக்காக தனது சொத்துக்கள், பண்ணை வீடுகள் போன்றவற்றை இழந்தார். எனினும், கடந்த 2005ம் ஆண்டு வழக்கிலிருந்து விடுவிக்கப்பட்டார்.

மைக்கேல் ஜாக்சனின் இல்லற வாழ்க்கையும் நீண்ட காலம் இனிமையானதாக நிலைத்திருக்கவில்லை. கடந்த 1996ல் பிரஸ்லி என்ற பெண்ணை திருமணம் செய்தார். பின்னர் 1999ல் டெபோரே என்ற பெண்ணையும் மணந்தார். எனினும், மைக்கேல் ஜாக்சனில் வினோத நடவடிக்கைகள் பிடிக்காமல் இந்த இரு திருமணங்களுமே விவாகரத்தில் முடிந்தது.

மைக்கேல் ஜாக்சனுக்கு பாரிஸ் மிசேல் காதரின் என்ற மகளும், ஜோசப் ஜாக்சன் மற்றும் மைக்கேல் ஜாக்சன் -2 ஆகிய இரு மகன்களும் உள்ளனர்.

சமீபகாலமாக உடல்நிலை பாதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தார் மைக்கேல் ஜாக்சன். இரு மாதங்களுக்கு முன்பு, ஜாக்சனின் உடல்நிலை கவலைக்கிடமாக இருப்பதாக வெளியான செய்தியை அறிந்து அவரது ரசிகர்கள் கண்ணீர் வடித்தனர். எனினும், உடல்நிலை குணமாகி மருத்துவமனையில் இருந்து வீடு திரும்பினார். ஜாக்சன் மீண்டும் இசை நிகழ்ச்சிகளை நடத்தவுள்ளதாகவும், அடுத்த மாதம் முதல் 2010ம் ஆண்டு வரை லண்டனில் சுமார் 50 நிகழ்ச்சிகள் நடத்த திட்டமிட்டுள்ளதாகவும் கூறப்பட்டது. இதனால் அவரது பாப் இசையுலக ரசிகர்கள் மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தனர். ஆனால் அந்த மகிழ்ச்சி நீண்டநாள் நீடிக்கவில்லை.

திடீர் மாரடைப்பு காரணமாக, நேற்று லாஸ் ஏஞ்சல்ஸ் நகரிலுள்ள மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்ட மைக்கேல் ஜாக்சன், நினைவு திரும்பாமலேயே மரணத்தை தழுவினார்.

ஜாக்சனின் மரணச் செய்தி, உலகம் முழுவதும் உள்ள அவரது ரசிகர்களுக்கு பெரும் சோகத்தில் ஆழ்த்தியுள்ளது.

Alexander Rybak - Euro vision 2009 - norway

Alexander Rybak,
representing Norway with his Fairytale, is a true wonderkid. He's written his own song, will be starring in a movie this summer and got the record amount of votes in the national selection!

Alexander Rybak
Alexander Rybak was born in Minsk (Belarus) on the 13th of May, 1986. He grew up at Nesodden just outside the Norwegian capital Oslo.



Alexander has played violin and piano since he was five years old, he also composes his own music and sings. Alexander has performed with artists like Arve Tellefsen, Morten Harket, Hanne Krogh and Knutsen & Ludvigsen.

In 2006 he won the Norwegian talentshow Kjempesjansen with his own song Foolin. Alexander has performed with one of the world's most celebrated violinists, Pinchas Zukerman, he has won Anders Jahres Culture Price and he’s been the concertmaster for Norway’s largest symphony orchestra for youths, Ung Symfoni, in Bergen.

He also played the role of the fiddler in Fiddler On The Roof at Oslo Nye Theatre (2007) and has a role in the forthcoming movie Yohan - Child Wanderer (August 2009).
